A Friend Like Lucy

After her family moves to a new place, Rose faces every student’s worst fear: being the “new kid” at school. Rose is afraid, anxious, and unexcited on her first day of school, but those feelings begin to fade after she is welcomed by her classmate, Lucy. Though she may be a bit different, Lucy’s warmth, energy, and confidence show Rose that starting a new chapter is much easier with a best friend by your side!

Author Lindsay Filcik is a teacher in Allendale, Michigan. She is a wife and mother of three. Her youngest daughter, Ivy, was born with Down syndrome which was a catalyst for Lindsay to take a hard look at the way disability is portrayed in children’s literature. She believes that all children deserve to see themselves as heroes in the books they read. Unfortunately, that rarely happens for disabled children. Lindsay hopes to work alongside the disability community and her daughter as she grows up to elevate their voices in the classroom and beyond.
